Gwangju 2019 / Newsletter Elite, March 2019
A special thank you!
Dear Aquatics Family,
Volunteers play a key role in the success of any event, and for us we are very much looking forward to welcoming them all this summer in Gwangju. For a few months now, I have been closely involved in the development of our volunteering programme for the FINA World Championships, which truly aims at engaging our population and especially our youth.
The application process having just ended, the feedback we received is extremely positive: close to 9’000 applications were submitted! It is truly amazing to see so many of you share our passion for aquatics. I am very much looking forward to the final selection of volunteers and to welcoming those who will be joining us this summer.
We have also recently established new partnerships with our renowned universities – the Language Education Institute of Chosun University and Seoul National University – from which hundreds of students will be involved in our interpretation and translation activities throughout the event.
One of the greatest gifts you can give is your time, and I would like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude to all of you, who have shown strong interest in contributing to the successful delivery of the Championships.
Yours in Swimming
3’000+ volunteers will be active during the Championships!
Volunteering is the key component of any major sporting event. During the Championships, 3’000 volunteers of all ages will be at work to support various tasks related to the management of visitors and competition sites, athletes’ delegations and media.
The application process was open internationally, with the goal of recruiting volunteers from around the world, with distinct profiles and rich backgrounds that will bring a strong added-value to the event.
In addition, 350 students from well-known universities in Korea have been called upon to provide support with translation and interpretation activities to ensure smooth operation of the Championships. Cho Hee-Moo, professor of foreign language at the Chosun University, said: “It is an honor for our university to have the chance to contribute to this fantastic event. It will be a memorable experience for our students and a strong added-value for their future professional career.”
Once the final selection is made during the month of April, the Organising Committee will provide several trainings, mainly focused on hospitality to ensure the highest quality service is delivered to all participants.
